Living in the Lowcountry means hurricane season (June 1 – November 30) is a regular part of life. When a storm threatens the coast, last-minute evacuations can be stressful. Preparing your pet’s emergency kit in advance is the best way to ensure your entire family stays safe.

Essential Pet Checklist for Storm Season

1. Medical & Vaccination Preparation

• Update Vaccines Early: Boarding facilities, evacuation shelters, and hotels usually require proof of current Rabies and Bordetella vaccinations. Ensure your pet is up to date before a storm is on the horizon.
• Keep Physical & Digital Records: Store paper copies of medical records and vaccination certificates in a waterproof bag inside your emergency kit. 2. Identification & Microchips

• Verify Microchip Information: A microchip is worthless if your contact info is out of date. Check that your microchip registry has your current phone number and home address.
• Wear Clear ID Tags: Ensure your pet wears a collar with readable ID tags detailing their name, your phone number, and any vital medical alerts.

3. Supplies & Evacuation Logistics

• Pack Food, Water, and Carriers: Pack a sturdy crate or carrier labeled with your contact details. Include a 7-day supply of food, bottled water, collapsible bowls, and a leash.
• Identify Pet-Friendly Evacuation Options: Not all human shelters accept pets. Research pet-friendly hotels or shelters inland along your planned evacuation route long before a watch or warning is issued.
